For the Spring 2014 College of Business and Economics alumni magazine I photographed Dr. Josh Hall, author of “Homer Economicus: The Simpsons and Economics.” The book takes the readers on a trip to the fictional Simpsons’ hometown of Springfield so demonstrate how economics takes in important role in our everyday lives. I knew this would be a lot of fun to shoot. There was a ton of Simpsons imagery I could pull inspiration from. I immediately thought of neon pink donuts. I actually bought some food coloring, made my own frosting and dipped the donuts myself. I also wanted to play with the chalk board concept, where we see Bart writing on in the opening of every show. One of the cliche phrases in Economics is “There is no such thing as a free lunch” so we played with the idea of “Simpsoning” it up with the phrase “There is no such thing as a free donut.” The biggest problem with this assignment was that it was one page story in the magazine so I had a ton of photos and they could only use one.
